A trip to the area is incomplete without a visit to Hearst Castle! Long considered the gem of the Central Coast, Hearst Castle sits high above the ocean on “la cuesta encantada” (the enchanted hill.) Surrounded by acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, you’ll find the historic Hearst residence is very much a Castle. The main residence and guest houses are literally overflowing with treasures Mr. Hearst collected on his many trips through Europe.
Designated as a State Park, Hearst Castle Park offers a number of tours for visitors. You can select among the “Grand Rooms Tour”, the “Upstairs Suites Tour”, the “Cottages and Kitchen Tour”, or the “Evening Tour.” Tickets for these tours are quite reasonable costing $12 for children and $24 for adults.
The El Colibri Hotel and Spa offers a “Hearst Castle Package” that includes a stay at the hotel and two tickets for a castle tour. The staff will take care of all the arrangements for you in booking your tour.
Hearst Castle has even designed an app to make your visit all the more interesting. You can download their app here.
Central Coast California
It may surprise some of you, but Winter on the Central Coast of California is perhaps one of the best times to visit to enjoy the sunny beaches. The Summer fog can often be a spoiler for a warm, enjoyable day at the beach. Come Winter, however, the weather usually satisfies with a crystal clear sky, and warm sunshine. It may not quite be swimsuit weather, but even in January over the last few weeks, we’ve enjoyed daytime temperatures in the 70’s! Perhaps this great weather is an insider tip, as you’ll find the beaches largely deserted, except for a few locals.
So whether it’s a mid-week getaway, a weekend of romance or family fun consider a Winter trip to the Central Coast and discover the natural beauty of the season.
If you have yet to visit the elephant seals in San Simeon, it is an absolute must!
The seals arrive just a few miles north of Hearst Castle to deliver their offspring and breed. Along the beaches, hundreds of these gigantic creatures can be viewed – it really is quite a sight. You’ll see newborn ‘pups’, the females and the huge males, which can grow up to two thousand pounds, fighting among themselves to establish dominance. It’s quite a lively display, and can be considerably noisy, too.

Be sure to bring your camera & have fun!
