A trip to the Central Coast is not complete without partaking of Hearst Castle: Consider a Hearst Castle Grand Rooms Tour!
Every evening, W. R. Hearst’s guests gathered in the splendid social rooms on the ground floor of Casa Grande—his formal name for the main house. Follow in their footsteps as you travel back in time and experience what it was like to be a guest at Hearst Castle, known then as “The Enchanted Hill.”
Tour highlights include Assembly Room, Refectory, Billiard Room, Theater, Gardens, Neptune Pool and Roman Pool.
As you stroll these historic and lavish structures and gorgeous grounds, consider how Mr. Hearst must have done so over 70 years ago! You’ll be amazed by the treasures he amassed as well as the stories of his entertaining the Hollywood elite.
The El Colibri Hotel and Spa offers a special Hearst Castle hotel package.

A trip to the area is incomplete without a visit to Hearst Castle! Long considered the gem of the Central Coast, Hearst Castle sits high above the ocean on “la cuesta encantada” (the enchanted hill.) Surrounded by acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, you’ll find the historic Hearst residence is very much a Castle. The main residence and guest houses are literally overflowing with treasures Mr. Hearst collected on his many trips through Europe.
Designated as a State Park, Hearst Castle Park offers a number of tours for visitors. You can select among the “Grand Rooms Tour”, the “Upstairs Suites Tour”, the “Cottages and Kitchen Tour”, or the “Evening Tour.” Tickets for these tours are quite reasonable costing $12 for children and $24 for adults.

It may surprise some of you, but Winter on the Central Coast of California is perhaps one of the best times to visit to enjoy the sunny beaches. The Summer fog can often be a spoiler for a warm, enjoyable day at the beach. Come Winter, however, the weather usually satisfies with a crystal clear sky, and warm sunshine. It may not quite be swimsuit weather, but even in January over the last few weeks, we’ve enjoyed daytime temperatures in the 70’s! Perhaps this great weather is an insider tip, as you’ll find the beaches largely deserted, except for a few locals.
So whether it’s a mid-week getaway, a weekend of romance or family fun consider a Winter trip to the Central Coast and discover the natural beauty of the season.
If you have yet to visit the elephant seals in San Simeon, it is an absolute must!
The seals arrive just a few miles north of Hearst Castle to deliver their offspring and breed. Along the beaches, hundreds of these gigantic creatures can be viewed – it really is quite a sight. You’ll see newborn ‘pups’, the females and the huge males, which can grow up to two thousand pounds, fighting among themselves to establish dominance. It’s quite a lively display, and can be considerably noisy, too.
January is restaurant month in Paso Robles and there are many fine restaurants to discover.
One of our favorites is Estrella, a Latin Caribbean restaurant located on Paso Robles downtown Park. It will delight you with their bright, colorful decor and satisfy you with their delicious food. Whether you are looking for Argentinean, Chilean, Spanish or Caribbean food, Estrella offers a good array of each. While the dishes may sound like your typical Mexican fare, i.e. empanadas, etc., rest assured there is a difference among these cuisines, and Estrella knows how to accentuate these differences. With the colorful decor and the authentic food, you’ll feel your off visiting one of these countries!
During restaurant month you can enjoy Estrella’s prix fixe menu of 3 courses for $30! What’s on Estrella’s prix fixe menu? Here you go:
Course 1: Chicken Tortilla Soup – Braised chicken, black beans, corn, roasted chilies, onions and garlic
topped with crema, avocado and tortilla strips.
Course 2: Spanish Chorizo and Shrimp Rellanos – Spanish Chorizo, Shrimp and manchego cheese stuffed into fire roasted
Anaheim chilies that are battered and fried to crispy perfection, topped with avocado pico de gallo and served with coriander rice and house made black beans.
Course 3: Capirotada de Estrella – this is the house’s special bread pudding with caramel sauce, cheese, bittersweet chocolate and pecans topped with vanilla bean ice-cream.
You can reach Estrella at 805-226-5406 to make your reservation.
