Favorite Wines of the Colibri

I feel so privileged to work at the El Colibri. It’s not only a wonderful hotel that strives to be the best we can be, to treat our guests with care and try to make every guests stay something special. But we also have the advantage of working in a boutique that has one of the best Wine Bars on the Central Coast—and THE place to be in Cambria on a Saturday evening. Every Saturday during our Wine and Music nights, we have the opportunity to listen to some fantastic local musicians as well as learning about and tasting wines from some of the best boutique vinters in the county. I’ve learned more about wine than I could have hoped for and have some to enjoy not only tasting wine but also thinking about the procecsses that go into making an excellent bottle.

I thought it might be helpful to do a round up of some of our featured wineries on the blog so that if you are thinking of taking a trip to the Central Coast and want to plan out a winery or wine tasting day, you can have a leg up.

Rangeland Vineyards

Rangeland wines is actually a part of a larger farm project that includes not only the grapes but also some of the best tasting artisanal beef on the Central Coast. The winery aims to create wines that are natural and grown and farmed sustainably to yield the purest expression of the grapes. They have a sultry Cabernet Sauvignon, a bold Petite Sirah, a wonderful Zinfandel that really explores what it means to be a California wine, and their perfect-for-the-holiday-season Mistletoe Blend. All these wines are available on their website and if you are keen they have a great club system set up where you can receive monthly bottles of wine or receive wine at a discount.

Cass Winery

Located in a stunning section of Paso Robles, Cass is a must-see stop on your wine-going itinerary. Cass has gone above and beyond to make sure that their Rhone varietals are doing proper homage to the French vines from whence they came with ENTAV certification of all their Rhone vines. This is a certification from the national agency of France responsible for the quality of wine grape varietals. It’s a relatively new standard in California but you can bet that with vineyards like Cass pushing the standards ever higher, it will be more common than ever. Check out some lesser known varietals from Cass like their Viognier, Roussanne, Grenache, and others. It’s sure to tickle your tastebuds and get you thinking about the grapes that made the wines.

Wild Coyote

Wild Coyote is nestled in an area of the Paso Robles rolling hills. They are one of the coolest wineries around with attitude to spare. We love how individual each of their wines always taste like they were made from someone who really, really cares about the grapes. It’s no surprise that Wild Coyote Winery is a family owned and run operation with Gianni and Kati running the operation while their little ones help out as they can. But don’t think that just because it’s family run that this means Wild Coyote is anything less than perfection. With a degree from UC-Davis’ Oenology program under his belt, Gianni is a world class winemaker. Check out their wines and consider staying at the winery in their B&B| It will be an experience you won’t soon forget
