Jaffa Cafe
I first experienced the splendor that is Jaffa Café while on a food tour with Central Coast Food Tours. We stopped by this spot – let me say, I was a little concerned as it looked more like a humble liquor store than a gourmet deli – in the middle of our tour for what I was assured would be some of the best Mediterranean food on the Central Coast.

My fear that we were going to enjoy “gourmet” food at a gas station subsided when we walked in and I noticed the decidedly gourmet grocery attached to the deli. I was really starting to relax when I smelled the delicious aromas emanating from the cook station. I was finally assured that this was a legitimately gourmet place when I peered over at a dish coming from the kitchen. And all my fears subsided the moment I sunk my teeth into their freshly made falafel. Amazing!

For the humble facade of this place, let me say, this is seriously the most memorable Mediterranean meal I’ve ever tasted. Part of it comes from the journey I had to take in order to believe that it would be this good. When you walk into a Mario Batali restaurant you expect nothing less than perfection (especially since you’re paying $35 a plate). The other part comes from the fact that the owner of Jaffa, Adnan is a great restaurateur who has hired some of the best chefs around. And finally, the last part comes from the fact that Jaffa uses the very best local ingredients to create a traditional Med menu. Everything is fresh and that makes for a delicious meal.
This is one place I would not pass by – it’s well worth the trip to San Luis to enjoy the food and the lovely people who work at Jaffa.
