SLO County Wine Month!

You know we love our local wines around here – we have a popular wine bar right in the hotel, we sponsor tasting nights with the best boutique vineyards every Saturday to not only give them exposure but also introduce you to some of the great lesser-known wines around, and I feel like I’m constantly going on and on about how wonderful our wines really are! Not the public needs much convincing because we have won all sorts of prizes lately (including the cover of Wine Spectator magazine not long ago)  but I simply find myself going on and on about how great it is.

Well, now I have an excuse. All September long (that’s 30 days for any of you not in front of a calendar) we’re celebrating San Luis Obispo County wines! From the very best bouquets to the most relaxing tasting rooms to the most awards won. If you have something to chime in with, please feel free. I want to open this up to anyone who is proud of the wines we produce here on the Central Coast, or anyone who’d like to learn more about  the wines and vineyards we grow here, or even if you’re just a beginner who is starting to figure things our, please let us know! I love to educate because that means that there will be more of you out there spreading the word about our wines.

 

Just a teensy little lesson for today: Did you know that everyone’s palate is different? What you taste in a wine is not necessarily what others will taste. Despite all the highfalutin talk about wines tasting of blackberries or French oak, always remember that you shouldn’t expect to taste the same things as a reviewer, or even your husband. All that said, there are a few tricks in my bag when learning about wine tasting:

  1. Check out the color and clarity of the wine. Is it deep claret? Or a brick red? Or even a bit brown?
  2. What about the opacity? Does it look like thick syrup or, when you tip the wine glass on its side, does the wine all run back into the bowl quickly? Do you see any sediment at the bottle of the glass?
  3. Take a whiff! How is the “nose”? Do you smell berries? Or vanilla? Does it smell sweet? Or sour? Or oaky?
  4. And finally have a taste. How does the taste compare to everything you’ve examine about the wine so far? Does it taste different than it smelled (I find that’s quite common actually)? How does it feel in your mouth?
