Central Coast Entertainment: Crystal Gayle at MidState Fair, Tuesday July 22

Crystal Gayle

P-hor_CrystalThe California Mid-State Fair offers up all types of great entertainment. While some of the concerts require purchasing a ticket in addition to the fair’s entrance fee, other concerts are “free” and a part of the fair’s entertainment. This year there are many “free” concerts worthy of your attention.

Coming up on Tuesday, July 22 with shows at 6:30 and 8:30 is Crystal Gayle. Gayle’s been on the top 25 top country music charts several times. You may remember her debut single, “I’ve Cried the Blue Right out of My Eyes,” which was written by her older sister, Loretta Lynn. There’s an interesting factoid for you – who knew the two were related? Remember Loretta Lynn from the movie “The Coalminer’s Daughter”?

Gayle’s fourth album, “We Must Believe in Magic,” helped her became the first female artist in country music history to achieve platinum album sales. Driving the engine of the album was the song that has become her career signature song: “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” CMA’s “Female Vocalist of the Year,” for two consecutive years, she became a Grammy Award Winner for “Best Female Vocal Performance,” thanks to her beloved “Brown Eyes.” As her music and her career path widened to mainstream audiences, so did her accolades. She is the recipient of three “American Music Awards,” voted by the nation as America’s “Favorite Female Artist.”

Great Location, Great Hotel!

“great location, great hotel” EW
El Colibri Hotel and Spa

We drove highway 1 from Pismo Beach to Santa Cruz (very scenic… Drive it going north though, that way you are in the inner lane and not on the cliff side! We took 101 to Pismo going south.). We stopped at several places, including Cambria. Cambria is a gorgeous village with lots of great restaurants. El Colibri is on the north end of Cambria. Close to the beach as well as to the restaurants. It is a boutique hotel, very cool and comfy. The rooms are nice, the bathroom is great: it has a nice tub and also a great shower cabin. They also had a nice breakfast included in the room price. We will be back. On the way north, once you pass the exit to the Hearst Castle, look for the elephant seal cove on the left. We saw hundreds of seals just sleeping/hanging out on the beach. It is an amazing sight (stinky too :)!

Karla Bonoff Concert on Friday, June 6th 2014

Karla Bonoff in Concert

Looking for a good Friday night activity? Doesn’t get much better than this: open-air concert at a beautiful and well-respected winery all the for  paltry price of $30 per ticket …. and, it’s a benefit concert to boot!

Harken back to the ’80’s and you will surely remember Karla Bonoff. In addition to success with her own recordings, Karla has seen her songs become hits for such artists as Bonnie Raitt, Wynonna Judd and Linda Ronstadt, and many of Bonoff’s ballads are now pop classics. Throughout it all, Bonoff continues to tour extensively, playing sold-out shows around the world. Her show is a heartfelt litany of one hit after another; with her earthy anthems of soul-searching, heartache, and joy shedding light on secrets of the heart that resonate with so many in a way few can muster today.

Few singer songwriters come to town with as impressive a resume as Karla Bonoff, but even that cannot measure up to spending an evening in the company of her and her craft. Accompanying Bonoff on stage will be guitarist Nina Gerber whose melodic touch, when combined with the voice of another musician of heart, creates honest, powerful and beautiful music in an unforgettable way.

Opening the show will be Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Eric Kufs. As the main songwriter for indie folk band Common Rotation, Kufs has released six full-length records and written nearly a thousand songs. With the lyrical poignancy of a Will Oldham, the dynamic voice of a Van Morrison, and the passion of a Bruce Springsteen, Kufs will grace Castoro Cellars’ outdoor stage with his sincere and soulful sound for your listening enjoyment.

This concert benefits Escuela del Rio a day program for adults with developmental disabilities in Northern San Luis Obispo County.

To purchase your tickets visit http://www.castorocellars.com/Events. Tickets are $30 p/person with a BBQ and wine available for purchase at the concert.
